Walk To Jerusalem by Easter
Shekinah Tabernacle Gospel Church is about to embark on a journey – our Walk to Jerusalem by Easter. This 12 week walking program encourages all parishioners to become more physically active and promotes spiritual growth by focusing on weekly Bible verses and devotions.
God wants us to be well and whole. Physical exercise is an important part of wellness. So is walking in God’s way. The Hebrew word that Jeremiah used for “walk” is “halak” which means to exercise your whole self, to follow, to grow. As we walk in the way of God, and follow God’s example, our whole self (mind, body and spirit) becomes stronger and more flexible. We are more prepared for the journey of life as we walk with God.
The Walk to Jerusalem is not only a great physical activity program, but it is also a reminder that God is present in every aspect of our lives. It provides an opportunity to flex spiritual muscles as well as physical ones. It can lead to health in all areas of our lives.
Here’s how the program works:
Each week, participants will walk, with family or friends, and log-in the number of miles walked. In addition to actual miles walked, you can earn 1 mile credits for 20 minutes of aerobic activity (dancing, basketball, track, mowing, house-cleaning, etc.) In addition, 5 extra miles will be given for families that walk together. If you are unable to physically walk with us, you can spiritually walk with us in prayer. 1 mile credits will be given for 20 minutes of prayer, for those who cannot walk.
There will be sign-up sheets near a world map. Each week participants will log in the miles they’ve walked and we will chart our miles on the map. Our goal is to collectively walk 6,675 miles from Detroit to Jerusalem. The most direct route from Detroit to Jerusalem is through parts of the U.S. to NYC. Then we’ll take an international flight over the Atlantic Ocean to Morocco. We’ll continue our journey through Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and into Israel. We’ll learn about different cultures as we walk through each country. After 12 weeks of walking, we’ll arrive just in time for the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
Walk to Jerusalem packets will be available starting Sunday, February 28th. The packet will include information for tracking your mileage and weekly devotions. The weekly devotions have scriptures and verses and questions to ponder as we walk this journey together.
There will be incentives along the way! Also prizes will be given for greatest number of miles, etc. (There will be surprises from week to week.)
I hope you choose to join this walk with us and increase your activity this winter and coming spring.
God bless you and good walking. Pastor
