The Book of Proverbs counsels us that, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” (NIV) Why is wisdom and understanding so lacking in our country today? Why does tolerance seem to be a thing of the past, as well as respect, compassion and forgiveness? James 1:5 gives us a solution, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV) If our leaders would truly trust in God as they govern our country perhaps childish stalemates, name calling, and blaming would not be the rule of the day.
Our great example of how we should relate to each other in matters of disagreement is and always will be our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I was always taught that we can disagree, but don’t be disagreeable. In other words we can respectful disagree with each other without being mean-spirited, hateful, or hurtful in our disagreement.
If we truly trust in God in matters of disagreement and not in political parties, or philosophies we may be able to come to agreements. Psalm 118:8 reminds us, “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” (KJV) Let us pray to Him who is able to keep us from falling, for guidance and direction in matters of misunderstanding. Proverbs Chapter 3: 5-6 cautions us to, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (NKJV) Does America truly trust in the Lord today? I think not. Let us pray for our country today.
“Father we come into your presence to first tell you, thank you. We thank you for the great country you have given to us. We thank you for the many freedoms that we have as a result. We thank you for democracy. We pray today Lord that you would touch our leaders and give them wisdom and understanding. Bless us today to seek you out and to be guided by your Spirit. Bless our leaders and bless those in disagreement to put away personal pettiness, pride, and blindness to see the possibilities we have working together. We praise and thank you today Lord. In Jesus Name we pray.” Amen
